What’s Your Aim?

I sometimes feel like life is a constant weighing of scales. Always trying to add value, prove something, do just the right thing. Making goals, working to achieve, rinse, repeat until the end of time.

It’s easy to get caught up in the relentless chase for worldly accolades. But occasionally, I have to ask myself: is that really what I want from my life?

Is that really what you want from your life?

I am frequently torn between wants of all kinds. Sometimes I want big, obvious success. Other times I’m searching for a quieter, more private success. And sometimes I just want to lie in a hammock and do nothing and not care about success at all.

But, when I really take the time to consider what matters to me, I see that my true core want, my core “aim” is to please Him.

Whether we are at home or away. we make it our aim to please Him.

2 Corinthians 5:9

For what will it profit a man if he gains the world and forfeits his soul?

Matthew 16:26

Those two verses, especially when read back to back, are powerful reminders to stay true to our souls and what they’re calling us to do (or not to do).

The words “aim” and “forfeit” stand out to me. They call me to know and pay attention to what I’m truly aiming for:

To live simply, honestly, and with an eye single to the glory of God.

I think we forget that all we really have to do is be disciples of Jesus Christ. Learn to love and serve and build one another up. Work to be more honest, more kind, more generous each day. Everything else, all the successes and accolades we could achieve, all of that is just the garnish.

And you can’t live off of eating nothing but garnish. Honestly, would you even want to?

Whether parsley or caviar, it’s just not sustaining. That’s what our souls are telling us whenever we get overwhelmed and frustrated and stressed and ask “what am I doing with my life?” It’s a spiritual hunger, begging for something more substantial.

So, here’s the question: What are you really, truly feeling called to do?
