In spring 2019, I decided to get some ferns instead of flowers to hang at the front of my house. Part of the reasoning was that ferns live longer and wouldn’t need to be purchased each year. In the autumn, I brought them into the house to keep them from freezing, thinking it wouldn’t be a problem keeping them alive indoors.
By January, the ferns looked dry and even a little burnt. What was I doing wrong? Watering them too much? Not enough? Did they need more sun? While reading about fern-care, I learned that ferns thrive in humidity. I live in Utah—a desert. During the winter, the air gets uncomfortably dry around here. Therein lay the problem.
Luckily, I had been thinking about getting a humidifier for a while—I don’t like the dry winter air much more than the ferns do. My skin had been itchy, the air stale, and with the flu going around, I thought it’d be a good idea. So, the information that the ferns would do better in humidity tipped me over into buying the humidifier.
I bought it and set it up around 8 pm. I turned it on low and went to read before going to sleep. By 7 am the next morning, the ferns already looked radically better. In less than 12 hours, they stood taller, greener, and their tendrils were soft again.
It’s amazing what a few hours of an ideal climate will do. Then, within a week, they looked as if they were never dying in the first place!
I remember sitting there, staring at those ferns, and thinking how crazy it is that one small change completely revitalized these worse-for-ware plants. It hit me that it may have been a small change, but it was also a necessary one. They needed the humidity.
It got me wondering, what am I lacking that I’m not giving myself that might completely transform my life?
It’s easy to feel discouraged and downtrodden. It’s easy to feel like you’re drying up, and it’s hopeless. Life’s a rough ride. But there’s always at least one small change that can make all the difference.
So, ask yourself, what is one small change you can make? What do you need that you’re currently not getting and what do you have to do to make sure you get it?
