How the 4Ns Help You Regulate Before Responding

oft sunrise over a calm path symbolizing emotional clarity and regulation before responding.

One of the most transformative practices we teach inside Unlock is the 4Ns — a simple pathway that helps you settle your emotional state before you respond in a moment of tension.

Here’s how it recently helped a parent navigate morning resistance with her daughter:

Name it honestly (I feel angry, frustrated, etc.)
Notice where the rising frustration is felt in your body (tight shoulders, chin, etc.)
Normalize it (“It makes sense my body is reacting this way. It’s okay to feel this way.”)
Navigate — choose a healthy response for you and for the other person

We then talked about something deeply important:

Modeling emotional honesty and emotional regulation for your children.

“I’m feeling frustrated.
I’m stepping away to calm my heart.
We’ll talk about your needs in two minutes.”

Children don’t follow instructions — they follow nervous systems.

Regulate first.
Then connect.
That’s how relational flourishing begins.
