Many of us were taught—directly or indirectly—that feelings should make sense before they are allowed.
So we explain them.
We justify them.
We try to fix them.
But feelings aren’t asking for solutions. They’re asking for attention.
When Feelings Feel Inconvenient
Some emotions interrupt our plans. Others challenge how we see ourselves. When that happens, it’s tempting to move quickly into explanation.
Understanding feels productive. Feeling feels uncertain.
But when we rush to solve what we haven’t felt, something important gets skipped.
What Awareness Offers Instead
Awareness invites a different posture.
Instead of asking “Why do I feel this way?” we begin with “What am I noticing right now?” Sensation. Emotion. Energy.
This gentle noticing creates safety. And safety allows feelings to move through us instead of staying stuck.
Letting Understanding Come Later
You don’t have to abandon insight. You just don’t have to lead with it.
When awareness comes first, understanding follows naturally—without force or urgency.
You’re allowed to feel without fixing.
For a research-informed exploration of why we intellectualize emotions and how awareness restores clarity, W Keith Denning explores this pattern in depth on his blog.
