Why Knowing What to Do Isn’t Enough

FLOURISH FIRST INSIGHT

Most people think if they know what to do, they’ll do it.

But in real life—especially in high-stakes moments—something else is often quietly driving the reaction.

You Can Know Better… and Still React Differently

Most people believe something that feels completely logical:

If I know what to do,
I’ll do it.

And sometimes that is true.

But in the moments that matter most—

when emotions rise,
when a conversation shifts,
when something feels at risk,

we do not always do what we know.

We react.

That Moment Can Feel Confusing

You walk away from the conversation thinking:

“That’s not how I wanted to show up.”

“I knew better than that.”

“Why do I keep doing this?”

And the hard part is…

you really did know better.

But in the moment, knowing was not the thing in charge.

Knowledge Is Not Always What Drives the Reaction

In high-stakes moments, reaction often moves faster than conscious thought.

Something underneath is already shaping the moment.

A pattern.
An emotion.
A fear.
A meaning.
A form of protection.

And by the time you realize what is happening…

you may already be reacting from it.

Most people do not need more information.
They need to recognize what is shaping the reaction before the reaction takes over.

The Shift Begins With Awareness

The answer is not simply trying harder.

It is not memorizing better words.

It is learning to see what is happening in you while it is happening.

Because when you can begin to recognize:

what you are feeling,
where it may be coming from,
what it is trying to protect,

something subtle but powerful begins to happen.

A pause appears.

And in that pause, you are no longer limited to reaction.

From Reaction → Awareness → Choice

Most conversations happen in reaction.

Something happens, and a reaction appears quickly.

But as awareness grows, that automatic pattern begins to slow.

Instead of one default reaction, you begin to notice:

There may be more than one way this moment could go.

That is where choice begins.

Not because the situation became easy.

But because you are no longer being carried by it.

The Reaction

Someone says:

“You always seem busy when I try to talk about this.”

The reaction may sound like:

“That’s not true.”

“I’m doing the best I can.”

Or you may pull back and say nothing at all.

The More Intentional Response

With awareness, you may notice:

“This feels like criticism.”

“I want to defend myself.”

And instead of reacting from that place, you can choose something different:

“Yeah… I can see how it might feel that way. I don’t want you to feel pushed aside.”

Same moment.

Different experience.

This Does Not Just Change Conversations

Over time, this changes how safe it feels to be in relationship with you.

Not because you become perfect.

Not because emotions disappear.

But because the people around you begin to experience something different.

More steadiness.
More presence.
More room to be seen.
More ability to stay connected when the moment is not easy.

That is where trust begins to grow.

The Real Work Is Not Just Knowing What to Do

It is learning to recognize what is happening inside you before the reaction takes over.

Because when you can see it…

you can begin to choose differently.

And when you choose differently,

you do not just communicate differently.

You show up differently.

And that changes everything.
